Although not much is known about his personal life, he came to Shaftsbury, Vermont prior to 1771. He served the cause as the first Town Clerk of Shaftsbury, a position that he held for 41 years. He was a Deacon in the Baptist Church and was married to Sarah Doolittle, whose father was one of Shaftsbury's Founding Fathers.
